Last month Mirukut and I got together with another friend S for the first cafe/coffee club thingy meeting (basically we just pick a cafe to visit together).
Anyway this month, Mirukut suggested we go to the Magnolia bakery that just opened ( June 16th) in Omotesando.
Knowing how ridiculous the queues can get here, we also picked a back up place just in case the queue at Magnolia was crazy, and it was. Though, to be honest I hate queuing for food anyways. I’ve no patience for it.
So to the back up place we went.

Tables is located inside Omotesando station on their food court. We couldn’t find it to begin with, but after getting some directions we got there. Echika food court is a really nice find. It has some interesting food places, wasn’t too busy and had a good atmosphere.
Back to Tables, it’s not an actual cafe but only a counter. Not a problem though, as there were plenty of seats in the food court. This locations’ main products were cupcakes and macarons. I got one of each because …well why not.
I picked their seasonal Peach Vanilla cupcake and their regular Black Vanilla macaron. They had a wide selection of both cupcake and macaron flavours, a nice mix of regular flavours and a few more interesting ones.
Although I am not a massive fan of cakes, after watching Mirukut disppointed reaction to her blueberry cassis cupcake. I did not have high hopes for mine. …However, I was pleasantly surprised! The peach vanilla was very delicious, it had a real peach taste, not the artificial plasticy kind. The sponge was just a plain victoria sponge type of cake, but it was light. The peach and vanilla flavour was all in the icing, which had a similar texture to cream cheese and was coated with a peach flavour glaze/ jam, which I actually really liked. They mixed well and as the cake was quite small, it was not too sweet or sickly. In fact I felt the size was perfect for me, I often get a bit sick of larger cakes. It always starts off well but just ends with me feeling ill.

The black vanilla macaron was on the other hand quite disappointing. The flavour was ok, sesame and vanilla but it was far too sweet. However the main problem was with the texture. It was stale and pasty, combined with the excess sweetness. I felt a little sick trying to eat it, and it wasn’t even that big! No where near comparable to Ladurée macarons. – Check out Mirukut’s post on Shinjuku’s Ladurée shop, Table’s macarons were just not even in the same league.
Overall though, I though Tables was a nice little find and if I am in the area and craving a cake, I would pop in. That peach vanilla cake was seriously good.
Have you been to Tables? If so, let me know what you think. Do you have a favourite sweet shop?
