Ever since World Breakfast Allday popped up in one of my cafe magazines, I had to go. The concept sounded fanastic “Get acquainted with foreign culture over breakfast.”
They have two breakfast that are always on the menu (as far as I can tell), British and Swiss and then they have a guest breakfast from other country.
Currently it’s Peruvian but the first time I went it was Russian! I did really want to try the British brekkie, you know, since I am British. But as it’s on the regular menu and I’ve never eaten any Russian food, I felt I had to try the Russian breakfast.
This cafe is situated off Gaienmae station on a main street. It’s not very big, with the kitchen at the back, and the front space is dominated by a large long table, giving it a communal dinning experience.

Since it was Russian month, they had lots to little Russian decorations about on shelves and on the walls. A small pamphlet with information about Russia and the food was included for every table setting, which I thought was a lovely idea.

I order Sbiten to drink, which is a hot drink of honey, water, spice and jam. Surprisingly not too sweet, and it was really warming. Perfect for a winters day.
And on to the breakfast, hopefully I can remember what everything was.

Clockwise from the right, meat balls, Kasha (millet grain porridge like), mushrooms, beet salad and finally crepe with sour creme and fish eggs. The beet salad and mushrooms were especially good, I wasn’t quite so keen on the kasha but I ate it all anyway.

And for dessert, we got honey cakes and shared them between 4 as we were stuffed. The honey cakes were delicious, they actually reminded me of a cheese cake my aunt makes.

I went again recently with Sarah and had the Peruvian breakfast.
I picked Chioha morada to drink, which tasted like chia infused berry juice, delicious. And as for the food, I loved everything about it.
Let me try to explain what everything was.
Inside the banana leaf, is a dish made from steamed corn powder called tamale, which is filled with a variety of foods such as chicken, boiled egg, olives, peanuts and chill pepper. The Tamale was an interesting dish, it was nothing like anything I’d eaten before but it was very delicious.
Along side the tamale, came a bread roll, a boiled and then fried slice of pork, purple onion salsa and sweet potato crisps. The staff at Allday recommended you eat all of them together in the bread roll, like a sandwich, which I did and it was divine. I especially liked the purple onion salsa, it was fresh and tangy and really complimented the pork.

Overall, this is definitely a restaurant I’d like to go back to, the concept is interesting and the food is well prepared and executed.
What country’s food do you really want to try?
Thank you for reading,
Alanna
